A Green Project for a Greener Earth Day
Being the eco-conscious mom that I am (and the fact that I’m a proud San Franciscan) joining a green project dubbed “Waste in Focus” by the award-winning photojournalist Peter Menzel and writer Faith D'Aluisio is nothing short of amazing!
This green project, sponsored by The Glad Products Company, documented the trash habits of eight families from San Francisco, Atlanta, Phoenix and New York City to have a clearer view on the waste management efforts of a typical American family of four.
The eight families, including yours truly, documented in a very precise manner the usual waste habit management for one whole week. After that D'Aluisio and Menzel sorted, weighed, cataloged and cleaned the waste, and then itemized and place them in a specific manner for the photo shoot. All recyclables and compostable items are on the left-hand side of the photograph while items intended for landfill are to the right. For our family, our total household waste for that week was 33 lb. – 11% or 3.7 lb was landfill and 89% (25.3 lb) was recyclables and compostable.
A very educational and empowering experience
Like I said, I’m an eco-conscious mom and lives in San Francisco (which is one of the leading states when it comes to recycling and green living) – but even this green mom still has a lot to learn when it comes to waste management. You can check out the full interview, here in SF Weekly.
For one, this experience shed a new light for me about the process that our compostable and our recyclables had to go. And it really helps to know these things because it gives me an even clearer understanding of the trash we accumulate as a family. This knowledge now allows me to make certain adjustments and make our trash management habits even more earth friendly than ever.
It was a pleasure joining this project – even more fitting since Earth Day is just around the corner! It truly empowers me and my family to continuously live and create awareness about a greener lifestyle –for a healthier and meaningful life and for the preservation and conservation of our beloved planet.
Honestly, I think I’m getting greener everyday!
